Many of you are probably familiar with the premise of the Pern books, but I'll give a short description for those who don't. Aliens from another world came to settle on the uninhabited planet they named Pern. What they failed to predict was the vicious storms of "thread", a lifeform that falls from the sky and eats away at any lifeform it touches. The aliens moved from the exposed Southern continent to caves in the Northern continent and generically modified the small "fire lizards" into giant telepathic dragons. Very far fetched, but the consequences are interesting.
