Book Review: The Book of Night with Moon

Title: The Book of Night with Moon
Author: Diane Duane
Genre: Fantasy
Page Count: 446
Total Page Count: 2,093

Diane Duane is most famous for her Young Wizards series. This particular book is set in the same world as Young Wizards, but focuses on a team of feline wizards. It's awesome to read a story from the point of view of a cat; the little details about whiskers, tails, and feline body language make it very believable.

In this story, the feline wizards are in charge of the "world gates" in Grand Central Station. A menacing force from a different, older reality threatens to break through the gates and destroy Earth. The magic in these series is different from any other series I've read. It almost sounds like balancing chemistry equations. It's also more realistic, with an energy (or even life) penalty that must be paid for each spell.

I enjoyed this book, but not nearly as much as some of the later Young Wizards series. Diane Duane is an awesome author (and she has a livejournal too). I admire her willingness to branch out into print on demand and other forms of publishing. When her publisher refused to print her third feline wizards book, she decided to take the book online. The first five chapters are available at The Big Meow website.
